CCAC President's Message
Anthony Mejia, MMC

Happy New Year! The CCAC Board of Directors met on January 19th to discuss several proposals including the organization’s Board structure, membership dues, and expanding services with our management association. These were preliminary discussions, and we will seek your input before any proposals impacting members are finalized. Of course, you are always welcome to observe the Board meetings and participate during public comment.

Honestly, I do not know how to start to write a recognition for someone so indescribable as Colleen J. Nicol. So besides reiterating the numerous achievements that many of us know about her, such as being a Past President of IIMC, CCAC, and the IIMC Foundation (formerly the Municipal Clerks Education Foundation) and being a Quill Award recipient, the highest honor bestowed by IIMC, and being named the CCAC City Clerk of the Year. And besides telling you all the things she did in the background that benefit all of us even today, such as being one of the leaders that found Technical Training for Clerks and fundraising countless dollars for municipal clerk scholarships. I know there is so much more that she has accomplished including her charitable work, but I am sure many people are working on proclamations to recognize her lifetime of achievements.

Instead, I want to express my heartfelt love and gratitude to the woman that gave me a chance, a helping hand, and a wonderful career. I met Colleen in 2006 when I applied for an Office Specialist position within her department. Despite being only 21 years old, Colleen saw my potential and instead hired me as a Deputy City Clerk. Colleen is good at that, she sees the potential in people, places them in roles they will excel at, and settles for nothing but their best. Since that moment, Colleen has been a constant, positive presence in my life. She was present at my first wedding anniversary, guided me as I changed jobs or ran for a CCAC Board position, and mentored me when I had challenges at work. When I was going through an especially hard time in my life and seeking therapy, I discovered that Colleen was a big part of my foundation and one of the people I most feared disappointing. Since that realization, Colleen’s love is one of the biggest factors in keeping me going. Several years ago, I had the honor of joining Colleen’s family at the funeral of her mother. Although I did not know it at the time, seeing her and her family grieve their loss is helping me stay grounded as I mourn the loss of my own mother who passed away last week due to complications from the coronavirus. Truly there are no words that adequately describe the endless love I have in my heart for my boss, my friend, and my role model.
